Every list of itinerary builders you can find ranks the same eight products and almost none of them print a number. That is a problem, because the price gap in this category is twenty to one. The same job, turning a client's trip into something you can send, is sold at $19 a month and at $399 a month, and the vendors at both ends describe themselves in nearly identical language.

The short answer

An itinerary builder for travel agents costs between $19 and $399 a month in September 2026, and the spread is about what gets bundled around the builder rather than the builder itself. TravelJoy Starter is $19 a month and caps you at 12 trips a year. Travefy Core is $39 a month on annual billing, with additional advisors at $20. Tern is $49 a month solo, or $35 a month billed annually. AXUS Travel App is $35 a seat a month or $329 a year. Tourwriter, aimed at tour operators who load their own supplier rates, starts at $99 a user a month on annual billing and adds a one time $1,199 setup charge. Safari Portal starts at $299 a month for a single user. The cheap end gives you a formatting tool and a blank page. The expensive end gives you a rates database, invoicing and a branded traveler app. TripAgent.ai does not replace any of them: it is a $49 a month AI trip planner that writes the day by day itinerary and prices the activities, food and local transport, so the blank page is already filled in before you open your builder.

So this page starts with the prices, read off each vendor's own pricing page in September 2026, and then does the part the roundups skip. Two of the cheapest plans cap how many trips you can build in a year, which changes the real cost per itinerary enormously. One vendor charges $1,199 before you build anything. One charges a penalty if you cancel an annual plan early. Those clauses decide more switches than feature lists do.

The last section is about the step that comes before any of this. An itinerary builder is a formatting and delivery tool. It does not decide that day three should be the Uffizi in the morning and Oltrarno in the afternoon, or tell you what that day costs. That is still you, at a blank page, for an hour or two per client. That is the part we work on.

Why it works

What the itinerary builder roundups leave out

Two of the cheap plans cap your trips

TravelJoy Starter is $19 a month and allows 12 trips a year, which is $19 per itinerary. Tourwriter Starter is $99 a user a month on annual billing and allows 25 itineraries a year, which is $47.52 each before the setup fee. Travefy Core, Tern and AXUS do not cap itineraries, so at 40 clients a year the $39 plan is cheaper per trip than the $19 one.

One vendor charges $1,199 before you start

Tourwriter lists a one time setup cost of USD $1,199 covering data migration, account setup and training. On the Starter plan that turns year one into $2,387 for 25 itineraries, or $95.48 apiece. No other vendor on this page publishes a setup charge, which is the single largest hidden number in the category.

The annual discount can cost more than it saves

AXUS Travel App sells $35 a seat a month or $329 a year, a $91 saving. Its terms of service apply a 50 percent penalty to annual prepaid subscriptions cancelled inside six months, which on $329 is $164.50. If you are trialling a platform switch, monthly is the cheaper risk.

Trial lengths differ by a factor of two

Safari Portal, AXUS Travel App and Tern each give 14 days. Travefy gives 10. TravelJoy gives 7 and does not ask for a card. A 7 day trial is not long enough to run a real client through a platform end to end, which is worth knowing before you plan your evaluation week.

What it handles

Tell it your trip, get a costed day-by-day itinerary

Share your destination, dates and budget and TripAgent.ai writes a day-by-day itinerary with real places, times and a cost estimate on activities, food and local transport. Name the city you fly from and the plan adds the return flight, a stay for every stop and the hops between cities, and you ask for any day to be rewritten until the plan fits.

  • Prices six itinerary platforms from their own pricing pages, dated September 2026
  • Works out what each plan costs per client itinerary once the caps are counted
  • Names the setup fee, the cancellation penalty and the trip limits the roundups skip
  • Separates the advisor tools from the tour operator tools, which price very differently
  • Shows where a solo advisor pays less and where an agency pays less
  • Explains what none of these tools do for you, and what to use for that part

Read from each vendor's own published pricing in September 2026. Where a vendor quotes rather than publishes, this table says so instead of estimating. Confirm anything commercial in writing before you buy, and re-check these figures, because travel software prices move.

Platform Entry price What the entry plan limits
TravelJoy Starter $19 a month, monthly only 12 trips a year, no AI drafting, no group bookings
TravelJoy Pro $32 a month billed annually Unlimited trips, AI drafting, group bookings
AXUS Travel App $35 a seat a month, or $329 a year Flat per seat, 50 percent penalty if an annual plan ends inside six months
Travefy Core $39 a month billed annually Additional advisors $20 each, unlimited itineraries
Tern, solo advisor $49 a month, or $35 billed annually Agency purchased seats fall to $25 a month from 3 seats
Tourwriter Starter $99 a user a month billed annually 25 itineraries a year, plus a one time $1,199 setup cost
Tourwriter Pro $149 a user a month billed annually 50 itineraries a year, 2 to 5 users
Safari Portal Essentials $299 a month plus taxes 1 user, $50 a month for each user after that
Safari Portal Pro $399 a month plus taxes 3 users, $50 a month for each user after that
TripAgent.ai $49, $99 or $199 a month, half billed annually Writes and prices the itinerary. Not a CRM, no client portal, no invoicing

How much does an itinerary builder for travel agents cost?

An itinerary builder for travel agents costs $19 to $399 a month. The advisor tools cluster between $19 and $49, the tour operator tools between $99 and $399. The difference is not the quality of the itinerary that comes out. It is whether the platform also holds your supplier rates, your invoicing, your client forms and a branded traveler app, and whether it expects one person or a team of twenty to be logged into it.

The number that actually decides your bill is the cap. Two of the cheapest plans in the category limit how many trips you may build in a year, and neither vendor puts that limit next to the headline price. Below is the same set of plans expressed as cost per client itinerary, using each plan's own cap where one exists and 40 clients a year where none does.

Plan Cost for a year Itineraries allowed Cost per itinerary
TravelJoy Starter, $19 a month $228 12 a year $19.00
AXUS Travel App, annual $329 Uncapped, 40 assumed $8.23
TravelJoy Pro, $32 a month annual $384 Uncapped, 40 assumed $9.60
Tern solo, annual $420 Uncapped, 40 assumed $10.50
Travefy Core, $39 a month annual $468 Uncapped, 40 assumed $11.70
Tourwriter Starter, year one $2,387 including setup 25 a year $95.48
Tourwriter Starter, year two on $1,188 25 a year $47.52
Tourwriter Pro, per user $1,788 50 a year $35.76
Safari Portal Essentials, annual $3,289 with the free month Uncapped, 40 assumed $82.23

Read that column and the ranking inverts. TravelJoy Starter has the lowest sticker price in the category and the highest cost per itinerary of any uncapped advisor plan, because 12 trips is roughly a quarter of what a working advisor sells. If you close more than about 17 trips a year, TravelJoy Pro at $32 a month annual is cheaper per trip than Starter at $19.

The tour operator tools look absurd on this measure and are not competing for the same buyer. Tourwriter and Safari Portal hold negotiated supplier rates, mark them up, generate the costings and invoice the client, which is work a retail advisor selling through a host agency never does. If you sell someone else's product, you are buying from the first group. If you assemble your own product from DMC rates, you are buying from the second. Our travel agent software page prices the surrounding categories, from CRM to host agency fees.

What does an itinerary builder actually do?

An itinerary builder takes trip details you already have and turns them into something a client can read, keep and act on. In practice that is four jobs: a day by day layout you can drag things around in, a content library so the Hotel Cipriani description you wrote once comes back next time, your branding on the output, and delivery as a web link, a PDF or an app on the client's phone.

What it does not do is decide the trip. Every platform here starts you at an empty day one. You choose the neighborhoods, sequence the stops so the client is not crossing Rome twice, judge how much a day can hold, and work out what any of it costs. Vendors have started adding AI to this step, and it is worth being precise about what each one means by that word.

  • TravelJoy Pro and Premium include Itinerary Copilot, which turns raw pasted trip information into structured itinerary items. Premium includes ten times the Copilot allowance of Pro.
  • Tern sells AI usage as a separate add-on called Tern Pro, at $19, $39, $99 or $149 a month on top of the subscription, billed to the advisor rather than the agency.
  • Safari Portal Pro includes what it calls Magic Import and Superbuilder on the Essentials plan, and adds Zapier, API and MCP connections higher up.
  • Tourwriter Premium lists a traveler app through Vamoos or AXUS rather than building its own.
  • Travefy Core and Premium are built around a drag and drop builder and a content library rather than a drafting model.

Notice the shape of all of those. They restructure information you supply. Paste a confirmation email, upload a supplier PDF, import a booking, and the tool files it into the right day. That is genuinely useful and it removes the retyping. It does not remove the hour you spend deciding what goes in the empty afternoon on day four.

Which itinerary builder is best for a solo travel advisor?

For a solo US advisor selling 20 to 60 trips a year, the shortlist is Travefy Core, Tern solo, AXUS Travel App and TravelJoy Pro, and the honest answer is that all four build a good itinerary. Pick on the surrounding workflow and on the exit terms, not on the builder.

AXUS Travel App is the cheapest of the four at $329 a year, and AXUS charges every seat the same flat rate, which is why AXUS wins for one person and loses to Travefy from three advisors up. The caveat is in the AXUS terms of service: an annual prepaid subscription cancelled inside six months carries a 50 percent penalty, $164.50 on a $329 seat, against an annual saving of $91. Our AXUS Travel App pricing page works that clause through in full.

Travefy Core at $468 a year is the most widely used of the four among independent North American advisors and has the largest template and content library behind it. Travefy charges $20 for each additional advisor, the lowest additional rate in the category, which is why Travefy becomes the cheap option the moment you are not solo. Tern solo at $420 a year is the newest of the four and bundles CRM, forms, card authorization and reporting with the builder, so Tern is the better buy if you would otherwise pay for those separately. TravelJoy Pro at $384 a year is the lightest, and TravelJoy is the one to take if client forms and invoicing matter more to you than itinerary design.

Full prices for each are on our Tern pricing, TravelJoy pricing and Travefy pricing pages, and the two head to head breakdowns are Tern vs Travefy pricing and TravelJoy vs Travefy pricing.

Tour operator itinerary software above $99 a month

Tour operator itinerary software is priced three to ten times higher than advisor software because it does a different job. A tour operator buys product from DMCs and suppliers at net rates, marks it up, and sells it as their own. That means the software has to hold a rates database, cost an itinerary automatically from those rates, generate a quote and an invoice, track supplier bookings and payments, and reconcile the margin.

Tourwriter prices that at $99 a user a month on annual billing for one person and 25 itineraries a year, $149 a user for 2 to 5 team members and 50 itineraries, and quotes the Premium tier for 5 to 20 or more. Tourwriter lists automatic pricing, supplier and rates management, booking management and traveller payments through Stripe on the entry plan, and adds agency commissions, Google Maps and bill export to MYOB or QuickBooks on Pro. Tourwriter also lists a one time setup cost of $1,199 for data migration, account setup and training.

Safari Portal sits at $299 a month for Essentials with one user and $399 for Pro with three, each adding $50 a month per extra user, with a 14 day trial that does not ask for a card. Safari Portal bundles CRM, pipeline, forms, e-signatures, invoicing and payments at the entry tier, and reserves travel dashboards, insurance offerings, Zapier and API connections for Pro. Safari Portal also publishes a $199 a month supported rate for advisors who qualify through a host agency, which is the cheapest route into that platform. Yearly billing on Safari Portal gives one month free.

If you sell packaged product you have already been quoted by one of these and the price is not the decision. If you are a retail advisor wondering whether to upgrade into this tier, the test is whether you hold net rates. If everything you sell is commissionable through a host agency or a consortium, you would be paying $3,000 a year for a rates engine with nothing in it.

The hour that happens before you open the builder

Here is the part no itinerary builder touches. A client says nine days in Portugal in May, two adults, $6,000 all in, they like food and walking and hate being rushed. Everything above is ready to format that trip beautifully. None of it will tell you that Lisbon wants three nights not four, that day six is the day to move to Porto, what the Douro tour runs per person, or whether $6,000 covers it.

That work is the hour or two per client that does not scale, and it is why an advisor carrying 40 clients hits a ceiling that no faster formatting tool moves. TripAgent.ai is the drafting step. Give it the destination, the dates, the party, the total budget and the vibe, and it writes the day by day itinerary with morning, afternoon and evening blocks, puts a cost on the activities, food and local transport, totals the day and the trip, sequences the stops with travel times between them, and rewrites any single day when you ask it to. Flight and hotel times stay as fixed points you set.

Then you take the draft into whichever builder you bought, replace what you disagree with, drop in the properties you sell, and send it. TripAgent.ai does not book anything, does not hold client records, does not invoice and does not have a client portal, so it does not replace Travefy, Tern, TravelJoy, AXUS, Tourwriter or Safari Portal. It fills the blank page they hand you. More on how advisors use it is on our AI for travel agents page.

It costs $49 a month for Wanderer, $99 for Voyager and $199 for Globetrotter, half those rates billed annually. Opening an account costs nothing and includes a one time demo of three full itineraries, so you can run a real client brief through it and compare the draft against what you would have written yourself.

How to choose in four questions

Most evaluations stall because advisors compare feature grids across products that are not competing. These four questions sort the shortlist in about ten minutes.

  • Do you hold net rates? If yes, you are shopping in the $99 to $399 tier and Tourwriter or Safari Portal is your shortlist. If everything you sell is commissionable, stay in the $19 to $49 tier.
  • How many trips do you close a year? Above about 17, a capped plan costs more per itinerary than an uncapped one. TravelJoy Starter and Tourwriter Starter are the two with caps.
  • How many people log in? AXUS charges a flat rate per seat, so AXUS is cheapest at one and expensive at ten. Travefy charges $20 for each advisor after the first, which is the lowest additional rate here. Tern discounts to $25 a seat a month from three seats when the agency buys them.
  • How long do you need to evaluate? TravelJoy gives 7 days, Travefy 10, and Tern, AXUS and Safari Portal 14. Book a real client trip into the trial rather than a test one, because the formatting time only shows up on a real brief.

One more, if you are switching rather than buying first time: check the cancellation terms before you take the annual discount. AXUS applies a 50 percent penalty inside six months. That single clause has cost more advisors more money than any price difference on this page.

Good questions

Questions travel advisors search before buying itinerary software

For a solo US advisor the four credible choices are Travefy Core at $468 a year, Tern at $420, TravelJoy Pro at $384 and AXUS Travel App at $329. All four build a professional itinerary. Travefy is the most widely used among independent North American advisors, Tern bundles the most CRM, TravelJoy is the lightest and AXUS is the cheapest for one person.
Between $19 and $399 a month in September 2026. Advisor tools run $19 to $49 a month: TravelJoy from $19, AXUS at $35 a seat, Travefy Core at $39 and Tern at $49 solo. Tour operator tools run higher, with Tourwriter from $99 a user a month plus a $1,199 setup cost and Safari Portal from $299 a month.
It depends on whether you cost from your own net rates. Tourwriter is built around supplier and rates management with automatic pricing, from $99 a user a month on annual billing. Safari Portal is built around proposal design and client workflow, from $299 a month. Both carry a 14 day trial, and Safari Portal publishes a $199 a month rate for advisors supported by a host agency.
Several platforms run trials rather than free plans: TravelJoy gives 7 days without a card, Travefy 10 days, and Tern, AXUS Travel App and Safari Portal 14 days each. A permanently free option generally means your branding is replaced or the output cannot be exported, which is why working advisors move off them within a season.
AI can write the draft. TripAgent.ai takes a destination, dates, party, total budget and a vibe, and returns a day by day itinerary with morning, afternoon and evening blocks, a cost on the activities, food and local transport, day and trip totals, and travel times between stops, and it rewrites any day when you ask. You then edit it and drop in the product you sell.
Tern, TravelJoy and Safari Portal each bundle CRM with the builder. Travefy includes a lighter client record alongside its itinerary and proposal tools. AXUS Travel App is closest to a pure itinerary and proposal platform. If you already run a CRM you are comfortable with, paying for a bundled one is the main way advisors overspend in this category.
Formatting a trip in any of these platforms takes 15 to 45 minutes once your content library is populated. The research and sequencing before that, deciding what goes in each day and what it costs, is the hour or two that does not shrink with a faster builder. That is the step an AI trip planner shortens.
Travefy Core, once you pass three advisors. Travefy charges $39 a month annually for the first seat and $20 for each additional one, so six advisors cost $1,668 a year against $1,800 on Tern and $1,974 on AXUS. Below three advisors AXUS at $329 a seat is cheaper, and the two lines cross at about 2.6 seats.
