How to plan a weekend trip

Work backwards from the hours you actually have. A Friday evening flight and a Sunday evening return is not three days, it is roughly 48 usable hours minus two airport transfers. Deciding that first stops the two mistakes that ruin most weekends: picking a destination too far away, and planning a Saturday that assumes you woke up somewhere you did not.

Then pick one neighborhood or one area as the base and stay in it. On a long trip you can afford to cross a city; on a weekend, one bad transfer is a meaningful percentage of the whole thing. Book the stay close to whatever the trip is actually about, even if it costs a little more, because the money you save on a cheaper hotel further out gets spent again in taxis and lost hours.

Where should you go for a weekend trip?

The honest filter is travel time, not the destination list. Anything under about three hours door to door works for two nights. Between three and five hours you need the third night or you will spend a third of the trip in transit. Beyond that, save it for a longer trip rather than compressing it into a weekend and calling it a getaway.

Inside that radius, pick by what the weekend is for. A city with one strong anchor, a museum, a game, a restaurant you have been meaning to book, gives a short trip a spine.
