A Japan trip costs about $4,690 for two adults for seven nights across Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, with rooms and meals at the US government ceiling, the bullet train and the city hotel taxes included, before the flights. Ten nights on the same route come to about $6,670, and a fourteen night trip that adds Hakone and Hiroshima to about $8,790. The city you sleep in moves the total more than anything else: a day in Osaka costs a couple about $130 more than a day in Tokyo, almost all of it in the meal rate.
Those numbers come from public, dated sources rather than a blog average: the US Department of State foreign per diem table for Japan (rates effective June 1, 2026), the city accommodation tax schedules published by Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the Japan Rail Pass prices JR Group set from October 1, 2026, and the national departure tax that rose on July 1, 2026. Everything is converted at about 158 yen to the dollar, the October 2026 level. Below is the cost line by line, four worked budgets, and the choices that change the bill the most.
If you would rather see the number for your own cities and dates, the Japan trip planner builds the itinerary and puts a cost on every stay, train and day.
How much does a trip to Japan cost per day?
The steadiest benchmark a US traveler can check is the one the State Department uses to reimburse its own staff in Japan. It sets a maximum lodging rate per room and a daily meals and incidentals rate per person for each city. Here is what one day costs a couple sharing a room at those ceilings, with the local hotel tax added.
| City | Lodging ceiling, per room per night | Meals and incidentals, per person per day | One day for a couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | $346 | $122 | $593 |
| Kyoto | $321 | $166 | $666 |
| Osaka and Kobe | $326 | $197 | $726 |
| Hakone, Nara, Kanazawa and the rest of Japan | $201 | $104 | $411 |
| Hiroshima, September 1 to July 19 | $128 | $87 | $302 |
Two things stand out. The three big cities cost almost the same for the room, between $321 and $346, so the meal rate decides which one is dearest, and Osaka's $197 a day is the highest in the country. And anything outside the big three is a real saving: a night in Hakone or Kanazawa costs a couple about $255 less than a night in Kyoto. Hiroshima is the cheapest base on the usual first route, though its ceiling jumps to $219 a night from July 20 to August 31.
These are ceilings, not quotes. A Tokyo business hotel near a JR station often comes in well under $346 for a double, and a Kyoto ryokan with dinner in cherry blossom week can cost twice that. Plan against the ceiling as the middle of the range, then move it up or down with the rooms you actually like.
How much is the hotel tax in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
Each city charges its own accommodation tax per person per night, scaled to the room price, and Kyoto's went up sharply on March 1, 2026. At a room near the ceiling shared by two, each guest pays about 10,000 to 27,000 yen a night, which puts them in these bands.
- Kyoto: 200 yen under 6,000 yen per person, 400 yen from 6,000, 1,000 yen from 20,000, 4,000 yen from 50,000 and 10,000 yen from 100,000. A couple at the ceiling pays 2,000 yen a night, about $13.
- Osaka: since September 1, 2025, 200 yen from 5,000 yen per person, 400 yen from 15,000 and 500 yen from 20,000. A couple at the ceiling pays 1,000 yen, about $6.
- Tokyo: nothing under 10,000 yen per person, 100 yen from 10,000 and 200 yen from 15,000. A couple at the ceiling pays 400 yen, under $3. Tokyo moves to a 3 percent tax from April 1, 2027, so a trip next spring will cost a little more.
- Hot spring towns such as Hakone add a bathing tax, commonly 150 yen per person per night.
The Kyoto change is the one to watch. A luxury ryokan at 60,000 yen per person now carries 4,000 yen per guest per night in tax, four times the old rate, and it is often collected at check in rather than shown in the booking price.
How much does a 7 day trip to Japan cost for 2?
For a couple on a first trip, plan on about $4,690 for the week at the ceilings, before flights. Here is the classic route, priced line by line: three nights in Tokyo, the Nozomi to Kyoto for three nights, then one night in Osaka before flying home from Kansai.
| Line | How it is worked out | Cost for two |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms, Tokyo | 3 nights at $346 | $1,038 |
| Rooms, Kyoto | 3 nights at $321 | $963 |
| Rooms, Osaka | 1 night at $326 | $326 |
| Meals and incidentals | 3 days at $122, 3 at $166 and 1 at $197, for two | $2,122 |
| Trains | Nozomi Tokyo to Kyoto, about 14,000 yen each, plus the local train to Osaka | $184 |
| City hotel taxes | 8,200 yen across the seven nights | $52 |
| Total before flights | $4,685 |
The flight is the one line that depends on where you live and when you go, so it is not in the total. Nonstops from the West Coast to Tokyo cost far less than a connection from the Midwest in cherry blossom season, and the planner estimates the pair of tickets from the US city you name. Japan's departure tax, now 3,000 yen per person (about $19) on tickets issued from July 1, 2026, is normally already inside the fare, so check that it appears on the receipt rather than adding it twice.
An open jaw ticket, into Tokyo and out of Osaka Kansai, is what makes this route work. It saves the three hour ride back to Tokyo on the last day and, for two people, about $177 in bullet train fares.
How much does a 10 day trip to Japan cost?
Ten days is the length most first trips settle on, because it gives Tokyo and Kyoto four nights each and leaves room for Nara as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.
- Rooms: 4 nights in Tokyo, 4 in Kyoto and 2 in Osaka come to $3,320.
- Meals and incidentals for two: $3,092.
- Trains: the same Nozomi and Osaka hop, $184. Nara is a short local train from either city.
- City hotel taxes: 11,600 yen, about $73, most of it in Kyoto.
- Total before flights: about $6,670 for two, or about $333 per person per day.
The extra three nights add about $1,985 at the ceilings. If the budget is tight, moving two of the Kyoto nights to Nara cuts about $510, because Nara falls under the lower rate for the rest of Japan and is only 45 minutes from Kyoto by train.
How much does a 2 week trip to Japan cost?
Fourteen nights lets you add Hakone for Mount Fuji views and a hot spring, and Hiroshima with Miyajima, without rushing the big cities. The route below runs Tokyo 4 nights, Hakone 2, Kyoto 4, Hiroshima 1 and Osaka 3.
- Rooms: $4,176.
- Meals and incidentals for two: $4,076.
- Trains: Tokyo to Odawara for Hakone, Odawara to Kyoto, Kyoto to Hiroshima and Hiroshima to Osaka, roughly 36,000 yen per person on reserved seats, about $456 for two.
- City and bathing taxes: 13,200 yen, about $84.
- Total before flights: about $8,790 for two.
Notice that two weeks costs less per day than one, about $314 per person against $335, because Hakone and Hiroshima pull the average down. Adding cheaper bases is the most reliable way to stretch a Japan budget without cutting the trip short.
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?
For most first trips, no. JR Group raised the nationwide pass on October 1, 2026 to 53,000 yen for 7 days, 84,000 yen for 14 days and 105,000 yen for 21 days in an ordinary car, about $335, $532 and $665. The fourteen night route above needs about 36,000 yen of tickets per person, well under even the 7 day pass, and the seven and ten night routes need only about 14,600 yen.
The pass pays off when the route doubles back, such as a return to Tokyo for the flight home, a run north to Sendai or Hokkaido, or several long day trips inside one week. It also does not cover the Nozomi without a supplement. The planner adds up the tickets your route actually needs and shows them on each day, so you can compare that sum with the pass price before you buy either.
How much does a Japan trip cost for a family of 4?
For two adults and two children aged 8 and 11 spending a week in Tokyo and Kyoto, plan on about $8,010 before flights. Most Japanese hotel rooms sleep two, so this budget takes two rooms at the ceiling: $4,694 for 4 nights in Tokyo and 3 in Kyoto. Meals come to $2,958, counting the adults at the full rate and, as our own planning assumption, the children at half. The Nozomi costs $266, since children 6 to 11 ride at half fare, and the city taxes about $96.
A family room or an apartment hotel with a kitchen is the biggest lever here. One larger room instead of two can take well over $1,000 off the week, and breakfast in the room cuts the meal line further. The family vacation planner paces the days with shorter train rides and earlier evenings.
What the main sights in Japan cost
The sights are the small part of a Japan budget. Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo and the deer park in Nara cost nothing. The paid ones are cheap by US standards, with one recent exception.
| Sight | Published price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Himeji Castle | 2,500 yen per adult 18 and over | Raised from March 1, 2026 for visitors who do not live in Himeji; under 18 free; an easy day trip from Osaka or Kyoto |
| Kinkakuji, Kyoto | 500 yen per adult | Raised by 100 yen in 2023 |
| Mount Fuji climb | 4,000 yen per climber | All four trails, summer season only, advance reservation; mountain huts are extra |
Can you take US business calls while you travel in Japan?
Yes, and it is worth planning for if the trip mixes work and leisure, because Japan is 13 to 17 hours ahead of the mainland US and an international day pass on a US carrier runs about $10 to $12 a day. Most travelers buy a local eSIM for data and keep their US work line on a cloud phone system for business that rings on the laptop or phone over hotel Wi-Fi, so clients still reach the same number. Put the call windows into the plan as fixed points, early morning in Japan for the US afternoon, and the planner builds the sightseeing around them.
Is it cheaper to plan Japan yourself or use a tour?
A guided tour bundles the hotels, the trains and some meals into one price, and it buys certainty on a first trip. It costs more than doing it yourself almost every time, because Japan is unusually easy to travel independently: the trains are punctual, the signs are in English, and business hotels near the stations are clean and fairly priced.
What is hard is the sequencing. Which city first, how many nights in each, whether the rail pass pays, which days to keep for the sights that need a reservation. TripAgent.ai writes the full plan and the cost estimate in about a minute, with the flight, each stay, each train and every activity, meal and local ride on its own line, and lets you ask for any day again. It does not book anything; you reserve the flights, rooms and tickets yourself, using the plan as the checklist. Start with the Japan trip planner, or read how the trip cost calculator builds the total. If you are weighing Japan against another big trip, the Hawaii trip cost breakdown uses the same government benchmark, and the multi city trip planner handles a route that adds Seoul or Taipei.
