A Hawaii trip costs about $4,545 for two adults for seven nights split between Oahu and Maui, with rooms and meals at the federal ceiling, Hawaii's room taxes added and four headline sights paid, before the flights and the rental car. Add the mainland flights at the Honolulu average fare and the same couple lands near $5,330. Ten nights across three islands come to about $6,520 before flights, and a family of four on Oahu for a week to about $5,190. The island you sleep on moves the total more than anything else: a night on Maui costs a couple $160 more than a night in Honolulu.

Those figures come from public, dated sources rather than a guess: the Defense Department non-foreign area per diem table that sets lodging and meal ceilings for every Hawaiian island (Hawaii rates effective October 1, 2025), Hawaii's state and county room tax rates for 2026, the National Park Service fee pages, the state park and city reservation systems, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics average fare for Honolulu. Below is the cost line by line, three worked budgets, and the choices that change the bill the most.

If you would rather see the number for your own islands and dates, the Hawaii trip planner builds the itinerary and puts a cost on every stay, island hop and day.

How much does a trip to Hawaii cost per day?

The cleanest benchmark is the one the federal government uses to reimburse its own travelers. Because Hawaii is a non-foreign area, its rates are set by the Defense Department rather than the GSA, and they are split by island: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hilo, the rest of the Big Island including Kona, and one rate for Lanai and Molokai. Here is what a day costs a couple sharing a room at those ceilings, with the room taxes added.

Island or area Lodging ceiling, per room per night Meals and incidentals, per person per day One day for a couple, room taxes included
Oahu (Honolulu, Waikiki, North Shore)$202$163$566
Maui$354$153$726
Kauai$350$165$745
Big Island, Kona and other areas$242$180$647
Big Island, Hilo$199$146$528

Two things stand out. Oahu is the cheapest island to sleep on by a wide margin, and Maui and Kauai cost a couple $160 to $180 a day more, almost all of it in the room. And the Big Island splits in two: Hilo on the wet east side is the cheapest base in the state, while Kona, where most resorts are, runs about $120 a day more.

These are ceilings, not quotes. A Waikiki hotel a few blocks back from the beach in May can come in under the Oahu ceiling, and a Wailea resort on Maui at Christmas can be double it. Use the ceiling as the midpoint you plan against, then move it up or down with the rooms you actually like.

Why are Hawaii hotel bills so much higher than the rate?

Because Hawaii stacks three taxes on every room. From January 1, 2026 the state transient accommodations tax rose from 10.25 to 11 percent, under the law known as the green fee. Each county adds its own 3 percent, and hotels pass on the general excise tax of about 4.7 percent. Together that is roughly 18.7 percent on top of the nightly rate, before any resort fee or parking charge.

On a Maui room at the $354 ceiling, that is $66 a night in tax alone, or $463 over a week. Many resorts then add a daily resort fee and a parking fee that do not show in the headline rate, and the taxes apply to the resort fee too. Compare rooms by the total at checkout, not the rate on the search page. Every room line in the budgets below includes the 18.7 percent.

What the main Hawaii sights cost

The best of Hawaii is free: the beaches, the Road to Hana, the Na Pali lookouts, the North Shore. What costs money is a handful of sights with limited daily entry, and most of them now sell timed reservations that open days or weeks ahead.

Sight Published price Note
Pearl Harbor, USS Arizona Memorial, OahuFree, $1 reservation fee per ticketTimed tickets on Recreation.gov; the battleship and museums nearby charge separately
Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu$5 per non-resident, $10 per carReservation required for visitors, opens 30 days ahead; children 3 and under free
Hanauma Bay, Oahu$25 per non-resident 13 and overAdvance reservation; children 12 and under free; parking extra; closed Mondays and Tuesdays
Haleakala National Park, Maui$30 per car, three daysSunrise at the summit needs a separate $1 vehicle reservation; no cash
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island$30 per car, seven daysNational Park Service fee page

Next to the rooms these are small numbers. The real cost of getting them wrong is a sold out Diamond Head morning or a Haleakala sunrise you cannot enter, which is why the planner names each one as worth reserving early on the day it falls.

How much does a 7 day trip to Hawaii cost for 2?

For a couple on a first trip, plan on roughly $4,545 for the week at the ceilings, before flights and the car. Here is the most common first route, priced line by line: four nights on Oahu, then a short flight to Maui for three.

Line How it is worked out Cost for two
Rooms, Oahu4 nights at $202$808
Rooms, Maui3 nights at $354$1,062
Room taxes18.7 percent of $1,870$350
Meals and incidentals4 days at $163 and 3 at $153, for two$2,222
SightsPearl Harbor $2, Diamond Head $20, Hanauma Bay $50, Haleakala with sunrise $31$103
Total before flights and car$4,545

Now the two lines that depend on where you live and when you book. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics put the average domestic itinerary fare at Honolulu at $390 in the first quarter of 2026. That average includes short inter-island trips, so a round trip from the East Coast in a holiday week will cost more, but it is a fair planning number from the West Coast. Two tickets at the average add $781, for about $5,330. Then the car: on Oahu you can skip it if you stay in Waikiki, but on Maui you will want one every day, and Hawaii adds a $7.50 a day rental surcharge in 2026 on top of the rate, the airport facility charge and the general excise tax.

The inter-island flight is the line most first budgets forget. It is short, under an hour in the air, but it is a separate ticket for each traveler with its own bag fees, and it takes half a day once you count the checkout, the car return and the new car at the other end.

How much does a 10 day trip to Hawaii cost?

Ten days lets you add a third island without rushing. Keep the same Oahu and Maui nights and finish with three nights in Kona on the Big Island, with a day at Hawaii Volcanoes.

  • Rooms: 4 nights on Oahu, 3 on Maui and 3 in Kona come to $2,596, or $3,081 with the room taxes.
  • Meals and incidentals for two: $3,302, since Kona's $180 a day is the highest meal rate in the state.
  • Sights: the four above plus Hawaii Volcanoes at $30, for $133.
  • Total before flights and cars: about $6,516. With two mainland tickets at the Honolulu average, about $7,300.

The third island adds about $1,970 at the ceilings plus a second inter-island ticket and a third rental. If the budget is tight, spending the extra three nights on Oahu instead costs about $1,700, and three nights in Hilo rather than Kona, with the volcano park still included, costs about $1,610.

How much does a Hawaii trip cost for a family of 4?

For two adults and two children aged 8 and 11 spending a week on Oahu in one room at the ceiling, plan on about $5,188 before flights. The room comes to $1,678 with taxes. Meals come to $3,423, counting the adults at the full $163 and, as our own planning assumption, the children at half. Sights come to $87, because children 12 and under enter Hanauma Bay free and only the Diamond Head entry and Pearl Harbor reservation fees apply to them. Four mainland tickets at the Honolulu average add $1,562, for about $6,750.

Two adjustments change the family number the most. A suite or a condo with a kitchen costs more per night than one hotel room but cuts the meal line hard, since breakfast and a few dinners at home on a family of four saves more than the difference in rent on most Oahu stays. And Oahu is the right first island for children because the drives are short and the sights are close; the family vacation planner paces the days around naps and beach time.

What is the cheapest time to go to Hawaii?

Late April through May and September through mid November are the cheapest times to go. Rooms drop below the winter and summer peaks, flights are easier to find, and the weather is still warm and mostly dry on the leeward sides of the islands. The most expensive weeks are Christmas through New Year, Presidents Day, spring break and the middle of summer, when both rooms and fares hit their highs.

Winter brings the big north shore surf and the humpback whales from December through April, which is worth paying for on a Maui trip, but it is also the wettest season on the windward coasts. If the dates are flexible, ask the planner for the same route in two different months and compare the totals side by side.

Can you write off part of a Hawaii trip if you work while you are there?

Sometimes. Under the IRS rules for travel inside the United States, if the trip is mainly for business, such as a conference in Honolulu, the airfare is deductible even when you add vacation days, while the lodging and meals on the personal days are not. Keep the business days and the leisure days on separate lines of the budget, and when you file your taxes online you can claim only the share that belongs to the work days. A plan that already costs each day on its own line makes that split easy.

Is it cheaper to plan Hawaii yourself or use a package?

A package bundles the flight, the hotel and sometimes the car into one price, and it can win when a resort sells empty rooms cheaply to a package seller. It loses when you want to split the stay between islands, pick a condo, or skip the car on Oahu, which is how most experienced Hawaii travelers save money.

Planning it yourself costs nothing but time, and Hawaii has more moving parts than it looks: the islands, the nights, the inter-island flight, a car on each island and reservations that open 2, 30 or 60 days ahead. TripAgent.ai writes the full plan and the cost estimate in about a minute, with the flight, each stay, each island hop and every activity, meal and local ride on its own line, and lets you ask for any day again. It does not book anything; you reserve the flights, rooms, cars and permits yourself, using the plan as the checklist. Start with the Hawaii trip planner, or read how the trip cost calculator builds the total. A honeymoon on Maui or Kauai runs through the honeymoon planner, and if Alaska is the other trip on your list, the Alaska trip cost breakdown uses the same federal benchmark.
