An Alaska trip costs about $5,600 for two adults on a classic seven night summer land trip from Anchorage to Seward, Denali and Fairbanks, with rooms at the federal ceiling, the Alaska Railroad between towns and one Denali bus tour, before the flights. Swap the train for a rental car and the same week drops to about $4,530 plus the car and fuel. Go in early October and the rooms alone fall by about $500. The total moves with three things: the month, the towns you sleep in and how you get between them.
Those figures come from public, dated sources rather than a guess: the Defense Department per diem table for Alaska (Bulletin 332, published in the Federal Register in August 2026, Alaska rows effective January 1, 2026), the National Park Service fee and bus pages for Denali and Kenai Fjords, and the Alaska Railroad fare table for summer 2027. Below is the cost line by line, three worked budgets, and the week that changes the bill the most.
If you would rather see the number for your own dates, the Alaska trip planner builds the itinerary and puts a cost on every stay, rail leg and day.
How much does a trip to Alaska cost per night?
Lodging decides the budget, and in Alaska it follows the season more than anywhere else in the US. The federal government sets a ceiling on what a traveler on official business can be reimbursed for a hotel night and a day of meals in each Alaska town, with different summer and winter rates. It tracks what rooms actually cost in that town and month, which makes it the most honest benchmark available.
| Town | Summer lodging ceiling | Off season lodging ceiling | Meals and incidentals per person per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anchorage (summer is April to September) | $329 | $239 | $148 |
| Seward (April to September) | $284 | $199 | $189 |
| Denali National Park and Healy (May to September) | $275 | $199 | $143 |
| Talkeetna (one rate all year) | $239 | $239 | $148 |
| Fairbanks (mid April to November) | $279 | $199 | $133 |
| Juneau (February to October) | $274 | $239 | $143 |
| Homer, Skagway, Ketchikan, Valdez (summer) | $275 | $188 to $199 | $143 |
Two things stand out. Seward has the highest meal rate in the state, $189 a day, well above Anchorage, so a two night Seward stop costs more in food than the rooms suggest. And Talkeetna is the one place on the main route that never goes above $239, which makes it a sensible night between Anchorage and Denali if you are driving.
These are ceilings, not quotes. A plain motel can come in under them and a lodge with a mountain view well over. Local bed taxes are added on top in most Alaska towns, so compare the total at checkout rather than the nightly rate.
How much money do I need for a week in Alaska?
For a couple on a summer land trip, plan on roughly $4,500 to $5,600 for the week before flights, depending on whether you take the train or drive. Here is the classic first route, priced at the federal ceilings: one night in Anchorage, two in Seward, one back in Anchorage, two at Denali and one in Fairbanks.
| Line | How it is priced | Couple, 7 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms | $329 + $284 + $284 + $329 + $275 + $275 + $279 | $2,055 |
| Meals and incidentals | $1,093 per person over seven days at each town's rate | $2,186 |
| Alaska Railroad, Adventure Class | Anchorage to Seward round trip $226, Anchorage to Denali $205, Denali to Fairbanks $102, per adult | $1,066 |
| Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour | $144.75 per adult, park entrance fee included | $289.50 |
| Total before flights | about $5,600 |
Flights to Anchorage and home from Fairbanks come on top, and so does anything you add in Seward, where a day cruise into Kenai Fjords is the reason most people go. If you want a longer trip, each extra summer night on this route adds roughly $545 to $660 for two at the ceilings, rooms and meals together.
Is the Alaska Railroad worth the price?
The railroad is the biggest variable line after the rooms, so it is worth pricing honestly. The Alaska Railroad publishes its fares a season ahead. For summer 2027, the Coastal Classic runs from May 14 to September 12 and the Denali Star from May 12 to September 16, at these one way adult fares:
| Route | Adventure Class | GoldStar (domed car, meals included) |
|---|---|---|
| Anchorage to Seward | $133 | $289 |
| Anchorage to Seward, round trip | $226 | $491 |
| Anchorage to Talkeetna | $127 | $299 |
| Anchorage to Denali | $205 | $411 |
| Denali to Fairbanks | $102 | $229 |
| Anchorage to Fairbanks | $294 | $578 |
Children from 2 to 11 ride for roughly half the adult fare. Notice that Seward round trip, at $226, is cheaper than two one way tickets at $133 each, which is why the planner prices it as a round trip when you return to Anchorage.
Whether it is worth it depends on how many of you there are. For a couple, the $1,066 in rail above is in the same range as a week of rental car and fuel, and nobody has to drive 240 miles each way. For a family of four, the same tickets come to about $1,600 even with child fares, while a car costs the same however many ride in it. GoldStar roughly doubles the bill: the route above would cost a couple $2,262 in GoldStar against $1,066 in Adventure Class, with lunch on board in exchange.
How much does Denali cost?
Denali charges $15 per person aged 16 and over for a seven day entrance permit, and children 15 and under are free. That is the small line. The large one is the bus, because private vehicles may drive only the first part of the park road, and the interior is seen from a bus.
The National Park Service lists the 2026 narrated tours at $116.75 per adult for the Natural History Tour and $144.75 for the Tundra Wilderness Tour, with children at $51 and $65, and the $15 entrance fee is included in an adult tour ticket. Because of the Pretty Rocks landslide, buses currently travel no further than Mile 43 of the Denali Park Road. Book the bus when you book the room, because July seats go first.
Kenai Fjords, the other park on the classic route, charges no entrance fee and no camping fee. Its coastal public use cabins cost $75 a night in summer and need a reservation. The expensive part there is the boat: glacier and whale cruises out of Seward are priced by the operators, and for many couples that day cruise is the single biggest line of the Seward stop.
If your summer also includes parks in the lower 48, the national park road trip planner costs each park by its gateway town, and our Yellowstone trip cost breakdown uses the same federal benchmark.
What is the cheapest time to go to Alaska?
The cheapest time for a land trip is the shoulder: late May, and late September into early October. The rooms show it clearly once the rates turn. Denali drops from $275 to $199 after September, Seward from $284 to $199 from October, and Anchorage from $329 to $239. Price the same seven nights in early October and the rooms come to about $1,553 instead of $2,055, a saving of about $500 for the week.
The catch is that Alaska shuts down fast after mid September. The Coastal Classic stops on September 12, the Denali Star on September 16, and the Denali bus tours by mid September as well, so a cheap October trip is a driving trip with fewer tours open. Late May is the better shoulder for most people: the trains and buses are starting, the days are long, and some summer rates have not kicked in yet. Seward and Anchorage summer rates start on April 1, Denali's on May 1, and Valdez's not until May 16.
Three Alaska budgets for two
Here is the same seven night route priced three ways, all at the federal ceilings, all before flights.
- Summer by train, about $5,600. The classic version above: Anchorage, Seward, Denali, Fairbanks in Adventure Class with one Denali bus tour.
- Summer by rental car, about $4,530 plus the car. The same rooms, meals and Denali tour without the rail tickets. Add the rental, fuel and any one way drop fee if you return the car in Fairbanks rather than Anchorage.
- Early October by car, about $3,740 plus the car. Off season rooms at $1,553, the same meal rates, no tour buses. Cheaper, colder, and with much less open.
Real trips land below these numbers when you choose plain motels, cook some meals or camp, and above them with lodges and flightseeing. The point of the ceilings is that they show the shape of the bill: rooms and meals together are about three quarters of a land trip even by train, and the month moves the rooms more than anything else you control.
A trip at this price usually goes on a card. If you are thinking of opening a travel rewards card for it, check what your credit score qualifies you for before you apply, so one hard inquiry does not land on a card you cannot get.
Is Alaska expensive to visit?
Yes, compared with most of the lower 48. Summer room ceilings of $275 to $329 a night in the main towns sit well above the federal standard rate for the contiguous US, and Alaska meal rates of $133 to $189 a day are high too. Distance adds to it: there is no cheap way to see Denali and the Kenai Peninsula in one trip without either a train ticket or a long drive.
What keeps it under control is planning the route as one line, giving each town at least two nights so you are not paying for half days in transit, and choosing the shoulder weeks if your dates allow. That is the arithmetic the Alaska trip planner does for your party and dates: it orders the towns, splits the nights, places each train or drive, and totals the flight, stays, travel and days against your budget, so you know what Alaska will cost before you reserve anything. The trip cost calculator page explains how that total is built.
Is a cruise cheaper than a land trip to Alaska?
A cruise can look cheaper per day because the fare bundles the room, the meals and the transport between ports, but it is a different trip: Southeast Alaska from the water, with Denali and the interior out of reach unless you add a land extension. Many travelers do both, a week on the ship and three or four nights on land before or after it. If that is your plan, price the land days the same way as above: the towns, the nights, the train or car and the Denali bus. TripAgent.ai plans and costs those land days; the cruise fare itself is something you compare with the cruise lines directly.
