A Costa Rica trip costs about $3,550 for two adults for a seven night first trip to Arenal and Manuel Antonio, with rooms and meals at the federal ceiling and both national parks paid, before flights, the rental car and guided tours. Stretch it to nine nights with Monteverde and the same couple lands near $4,450. Most leisure travelers spend less than the ceiling on meals and more than it on one or two splurge nights, so the total moves with three things: the season, the regions you sleep in and whether you drive or take shuttles.

Those figures come from public, dated sources rather than a guess: the US State Department foreign per diem table for Costa Rica (rates effective June 1, 2026, unchanged in the October 2026 publication) and the fee schedule of SINAC, the agency that runs Costa Rica's national parks. Below is the cost line by line, three worked budgets, and the choices that change the bill the most.

If you would rather see the number for your own dates, the Costa Rica trip planner builds the itinerary and puts a cost on every stay, drive and day.

How much does a trip to Costa Rica cost per day?

The cleanest benchmark is the one the US government uses to reimburse its own travelers. The State Department sets a maximum nightly lodging rate and a daily meals and incidentals rate for every country, and for Costa Rica it is a single rate everywhere: San Jose and every other location share the same ceiling. That is unusual. Italy, for comparison, has separate rates for Rome, Florence and Venice, and Alaska has a different summer and winter rate in each town.

Line Published figure Where it comes from
Lodging ceiling, per room per night$147State Department per diem, San Jose and Other, effective June 1, 2026
Meals and incidentals, per person per day$153Same table
Daily ceiling, one traveler$300Lodging plus meals and incidentals
Manuel Antonio National Park, non resident adult$18.08SINAC base fee $16 plus 13% sales tax
Arenal Volcano, Poas, Tortuguero, Rincon de la Vieja, adultabout $16.95SINAC base fee $15 plus 13% sales tax
Non resident child, 2 to 11about $5.65SINAC base fee $5 plus 13% sales tax
Departure tax, per person$29Included in the fare by most airlines since 2014

Two things stand out. The meal rate, $153 a day, is higher than the room rate, which tells you the government expects business travelers to eat in hotel restaurants. A couple eating breakfast at the lodge and lunch at a soda, the small family restaurants serving a casado plate of rice, beans, plantain and meat, will spend well under that. And the park fees are small next to everything else: entry to Costa Rica's two most visited volcano and beach parks costs a couple about $70 in total.

These are ceilings, not quotes. A cabina in La Fortuna can come in at half the lodging ceiling, and a resort with a pool above Manuel Antonio can cost three times it in the dry season. Use the ceiling as the midpoint you plan against, then move it up or down with the rooms you actually like.

How much money do I need for a week in Costa Rica?

For a couple on a first trip, plan on roughly $3,550 for the week at the ceilings, before flights, the car and tours. Here is the most common first route, priced line by line: four nights near Arenal and three on the Pacific coast at Manuel Antonio.

Line, two adults, 7 nights How it is counted Cost
Rooms7 nights at $147$1,029
Meals and incidentals8 days at $153, two people$2,448
Arenal Volcano National Park2 adults at about $16.95$33.90
Manuel Antonio National Park2 adults at $18.08$36.16
Total before flights, car and tours$3,547

Add the flights from your US city, a rental car or shuttle seats for the two long drives (San Jose to La Fortuna is about three hours, La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio about four and a half), and the two or three paid experiences most people book: the hanging bridges or a hot springs evening near Arenal, and a guided walk inside Manuel Antonio, where a naturalist with a spotting scope finds the sloths you would otherwise walk past.

How much does a 10 day trip to Costa Rica cost for 2?

Ten days lets you add Monteverde's cloud forest between the volcano and the beach, and it is the trip most first time visitors end up taking. Split the nine nights as three near Arenal, two in Monteverde, three near Manuel Antonio and one close to San Jose airport for an early flight home.

Line, two adults, 9 nights How it is counted Cost
Rooms9 nights at $147$1,323
Meals and incidentals10 days at $153, two people$3,060
Arenal and Manuel Antonio park entry2 adults at each$70.06
Total before flights, car and tours$4,453

Monteverde adds less to the room line than people expect and more to the activity line. Most of what you go there for, the hanging bridges, the cloud forest reserves and the night walks, sits on private reserves that set their own ticket prices, separate from the national park fees above. It also adds the slowest drive of the trip: La Fortuna to Monteverde is about three and a half hours by road, around the lake, even though the two are close on the map. Some travelers take the jeep, boat and jeep transfer across Lake Arenal instead, which takes about as long and is far more scenic.

How much does a Costa Rica trip cost for a family of four?

A family trip shifts the math in two directions. The per person lines grow: park entry for two adults and two children aged 2 to 11 at Arenal and Manuel Antonio comes to about $92.66 rather than $70.06, and every shuttle seat and guided tour is priced per head. But the lines priced per unit stay flat. A family room or a two bedroom rental near Arenal costs one rate whoever sleeps in it, and a rental car costs the same with four in it as with two.

That is why families almost always come out ahead with a car. Shuttles charge per seat on every leg, so four seats between La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio cost twice what two do, while the car and its mandatory local liability cover, which rental desks commonly charge at $15 to $25 a day on top of the online rate, do not change. Over ten days that insurance alone is $150 to $250, so price it in from the start rather than meeting it at the counter. For pacing with children, the family vacation planner keeps the drive days short and the afternoons free.

Is Costa Rica expensive to visit?

Costa Rica is widely seen as the priciest country in Central America for travelers, but it is cheaper than the US destinations it competes with for a week of nature. The State Department ceiling of $147 a night compares with $329 for a summer night in Anchorage on the Defense Department table, and Rome's ceiling is $489. Where Costa Rica catches people out is the add ons: guided tours, private reserves, zip lines and the rental car insurance are priced close to US levels, and they are where a moderate trip quietly becomes an expensive one.

Prices are commonly quoted in US dollars in the tourist regions, and cards are accepted almost everywhere you would stay, so the cost you plan is the cost you pay without much exchange rate guesswork.

What is the cheapest time to go to Costa Rica?

The green season, May through November, is the cheapest time to go. Room rates fall from their December to April peak, the parks are quieter, and the rain usually arrives as an afternoon downpour rather than a lost day. July often brings a short drier spell, which makes it a good compromise for families on a school schedule. September and October are the wettest months on the Pacific side and the cheapest of all, though some smaller lodges close for part of that window and a few unpaved roads get harder to drive.

The most expensive weeks are Christmas to New Year and Easter week, when Costa Rican families travel too and the popular beaches fill. If your dates are fixed to those weeks, reserve Manuel Antonio entry and the beach rooms first, because those are the two that sell out.

What costs do people forget when budgeting for Costa Rica?

Four come up again and again. The first is the rental car liability insurance described above, which is required by local law and often missing from the price on a booking site. The second is the private reserve tickets in Monteverde and around Arenal, which are separate from the national park fees and add up quickly over a few days. The third is the guided walk: Manuel Antonio entry is $18.08, but most visitors add a naturalist guide, and that costs several times the entry fee. The fourth is the airport night: an early international departure from San Jose usually means one extra night near the airport rather than a dawn drive from the coast.

Some travelers turn the trip into a longer stay. Costa Rica offers a digital nomad visa for people who earn a steady income from outside the country, which is why a lot of Americans with fully remote jobs stretch a week into a month. The budget logic changes at that length: a monthly rental replaces the nightly rate, and the car becomes the biggest single line.

How to get the number for your own Costa Rica trip

The worked budgets above use a government ceiling so the math is honest and checkable. Your trip will not sleep at the ceiling every night or eat at it every day, which is why the useful number is the one built from your actual route, rooms and party. That is the arithmetic the Costa Rica trip planner does: it orders the regions around the airports you choose, splits the nights, places each drive or shuttle on its day, adds the park tickets to the days you visit and totals the flight, stays, travel and days against your budget, so you know what Costa Rica will cost before you reserve anything. The trip cost calculator page explains how that total is built, and if you are weighing Costa Rica against a US trip, the Hawaii trip planner prices the islands the same way.
