Costa Rica trip planner and Costa Rica vacation planner with the trip cost by region
Most people planning a first Costa Rica trip start with the same three wishes: see Arenal Volcano, walk a hanging bridge in the cloud forest, and finish on a Pacific beach. The wishes are the easy part. Turning them into nine days that work is harder, because the country has two international airports on opposite sides, Monteverde sits at the end of a slow mountain road, and a drive that looks short on the map eats most of a day.
Day-by-day itinerary · a cost on every line · rebuilds any day on request
The short answer
A Costa Rica trip planner has to settle three things first: which airport to fly into, which regions fit your days, and how long the drives between them really take, because 100 miles in Costa Rica can mean three or four hours on mountain roads. TripAgent.ai works all three out from one brief. Give it the places you have in mind (or just "first trip, volcano, cloud forest and a beach, nine days"), your dates, who is going, a total budget, the style of trip and the US city you fly from, and it orders the regions so the route never doubles back, splits the nights, places each drive or shuttle on the day it happens and writes every day in morning, afternoon and evening blocks. The estimate covers the flight for your party, each stay per night, each leg between regions, and every tour, park ticket, meal and local ride, totaled per day and for the trip against your budget. You book the flights, rooms, car and tours yourself. Plans start at $49 a month after a one-time demo.
TripAgent.ai turns that wish list into a plan with numbers on it. Tell it where, when, who is going, the budget and the kind of trip, and it builds a day by day itinerary with the route, the nights, the drive or shuttle between regions and a cost on every line, so you can see what nine days from San Jose to the coast will cost before you put a card down for a single room.

Why it works
Three things that make a Costa Rica itinerary work
The right airport for the route
San Jose (SJO) suits Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio; Liberia (LIR) suits the Guanacaste beaches. Flying into one and out of the other saves a long drive back. The planner orders the regions around the airports you choose.
Drive times, not map miles
Arenal to Monteverde is a short line on the map and most of a day on the road. Each drive or shuttle is placed on its day with a realistic time, and the planner flags a route that asks too much of the days you have.
Every dollar sits on a line
The flight from your US city, each stay, each drive or shuttle, and every park ticket, tour, meal and local ride are estimated and totaled per day and for the trip, so you see which region is eating the budget while you can still change the plan.
What it handles
Tell it your trip, get a costed day-by-day itinerary
Share your destination, dates and budget and TripAgent.ai writes a day-by-day itinerary with real places, times and a cost estimate on activities, food and local transport. Name the city you fly from and the plan adds the return flight, a stay for every stop and the hops between cities, and you ask for any day to be rewritten until the plan fits.
- Orders Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Guanacaste, Tortuguero or the Osa Peninsula so the route runs one way
- Splits your nights between regions against your total dates
- Times each drive or shuttle between regions and adds its estimated cost on the day it happens
- Estimates the flight for your whole party from the US city you name
- Puts a cost on every park ticket, tour, meal and local ride and totals each day
- Rewrites and recosts any single day you ask for again

Three ways to plan a Costa Rica trip, and what each one costs you
Most US travelers planning Costa Rica end up choosing between a vacation package, a local custom trip agency, or a planner that writes and prices the trip for them to book. Here is what each one hands you.
| What you get | Vacation package or custom trip agency | TripAgent.ai |
|---|---|---|
| Price | One package price with rooms, transfers and tours bundled and the margin inside; custom agencies quote after an inquiry | $49 a month, or $24 a month billed annually, after a one-time demo |
| Time to a first plan | An inquiry form, then a proposal by email | A full day by day plan in about a minute |
| Route and nights | Fixed by the package, or set by the agent after a call | Ordered to run one way between your airports, nights split against your dates, with a warning when the drives are too long for the days |
| Trip cost | One price with the parts bundled together | An estimate on the flight, each stay, each drive or shuttle and every park ticket, tour, meal and local ride, totaled per day |
| Changing a day | Another round of emails, or not possible inside a package | Ask for that day again and only that day is rewritten and recosted |
| Booking | Handled by the agency or the package seller | None. You reserve the flights, rooms, rental car and tours yourself, where you prefer |
| Best for | Travelers who want every transfer and room held by one company | Travelers who want the plan and the numbers now, and are happy to book it themselves |
How much does a trip to Costa Rica cost?
A trip to Costa Rica costs what the regions, the season and the room make it, which is why the figures online run from $50 a day for a backpacker to well over $400 for a couple in a resort. A steadier starting point is a published, dated number. The US Department of State sets a maximum lodging rate and a daily meals and incidentals rate for Costa Rica for government travelers, and it is the most authoritative benchmark a US traveler can check.
From the State Department foreign per diem table (rates effective June 1, 2026, still current in the October 2026 publication), San Jose and every other Costa Rica location share one rate: up to $147 a night for lodging and $153 a day for meals and incidentals, a $300 daily ceiling. Unlike Italy or Alaska, the government does not split Costa Rica by town, so the regional differences below come from the park fees, the drives and the season rather than the ceiling.
| Line on the bill | Published figure | Source and note |
|---|---|---|
| Lodging ceiling per night | $147 | State Department per diem, San Jose and Other, effective June 1, 2026 |
| Meals and incidentals per day | $153 | Same table, per traveler |
| Manuel Antonio National Park entry | $18.08 per adult | SINAC base fee $16 for non residents plus 13% sales tax; children 2 to 11 pay a lower fee |
| Arenal Volcano, Poas, Tortuguero, Rincon de la Vieja entry | about $16.95 per adult | SINAC base fee $15 for non residents plus 13% sales tax |
| Tenorio (Rio Celeste) entry | about $13.56 per adult | SINAC base fee $12 plus 13% sales tax |
| Departure tax | $29 per person | Included in the fare by most airlines; check your ticket |
| Rental car liability insurance | about $15 to $25 a day | Mandatory local cover that rental desks add on top of the online base rate |
These are ceilings and published fees, not quotes, and Costa Rica rooms vary more than most countries: a cabina in La Fortuna and a resort above Manuel Antonio can sit $300 apart on the same night. But the ceiling shows the shape of the bill. Put a nine night first trip for a couple at the ceilings: three nights near Arenal, two in Monteverde, three near Manuel Antonio and one in San Jose before the flight home. Lodging comes to $1,323, meals and incidentals for two over ten days to $3,060, and park entry at Arenal and Manuel Antonio for both of you to $70. That is about $4,450 before the flights, the rental car and the guided tours.
The planner does the same arithmetic for your trip rather than a government one. Once the days are written, each stay, drive and tour carries its own estimate, so the total reflects where you actually sleep and what you actually do. The Costa Rica trip cost breakdown walks through three full budgets, and the trip cost calculator page explains how the planner builds the total.
How many days do you need in Costa Rica?
Seven days covers two regions comfortably, usually Arenal and one beach. Nine or ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip: Arenal, Monteverde and the Pacific coast without spending every other day in the car. Two weeks lets you add Tortuguero on the Caribbean side, the Osa Peninsula, or a slower stretch on the Nicoya Peninsula.
The rule that keeps the trip from turning into a drive: count every move between regions as half a day, and give each region at least two nights. San Jose to La Fortuna is about three hours, La Fortuna to Monteverde about three and a half by road, and Monteverde to Manuel Antonio about four. If you give the planner five regions and six days, it tells you what that costs you in sightseeing rather than quietly cramming them in.
Should you fly into San Jose or Liberia?
Fly into San Jose (SJO) if the trip centers on Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio or the Caribbean side. Fly into Liberia (LIR) if it centers on the Guanacaste beaches such as Tamarindo or Playa Conchal, which sit about an hour from that airport and five or more from San Jose.
For a trip that covers both, an open jaw ticket (into Liberia, home from San Jose, or the reverse) removes a full day of driving back to where you started. That pair can price very differently from a round trip, depending on the US city you leave from. The planner treats the route as one line and estimates the flights for your party from the US city you name, so the comparison sits on the page instead of in your head.
Rental car or shuttle in Costa Rica?
Both work, and they cost very differently. Shared tourist shuttles run between the main regions on fixed schedules and charge per seat, which suits one or two travelers who do not want to drive mountain roads. A rental car gives you the stops along the way and usually turns cheaper once there are three or four of you, because the shuttle is priced per person and the car is not.
The catch with the car is the insurance. Costa Rica requires a local liability cover that the rental desk adds at pickup, commonly $15 to $25 a day, and it is often missing from the price you saw online. A 4x4 is worth it for Monteverde in the green season and for parts of the Nicoya and Osa peninsulas. The planner can build either version from the same brief, so you can compare a shuttle total against a car total for your party before choosing. For a longer self drive loop, the road trip planner uses the same routing.
What costs do people forget when planning Costa Rica?
The park tickets are the first. Costa Rica national parks are run by SINAC, and the popular ones cap daily visitors and sell entry online in advance, so Manuel Antonio in particular can be sold out on the day you arrive in the dry season. The fee is small, $18.08 per adult, but the guided walk most people add inside the park costs several times that. The planner names what is worth reserving early on that day, with a search link.
The second is the private reserves. Many of the experiences people picture, such as the Monteverde hanging bridges, the Arenal hot springs and the cloud forest night walks, are on private land with their own ticket prices, separate from the national park fees above. The third is the season. December through April is the dry season and the most expensive time for rooms; May through November is the green season, with afternoon rain, lower rates and quieter parks, and September and October are the wettest on the Pacific side.
Should you book a Costa Rica vacation package or plan it yourself?
A vacation package or a local custom trip agency makes sense when you want one company to hold every room, transfer and tour, and you are happy for the price of that convenience to sit inside one bundled number. The route and the nights are usually fixed, or set by an agent after an inquiry and a few emails.
Planning it yourself costs nothing but time, and for Costa Rica that time goes into drive times, airport choice and comparing a car against shuttles. TripAgent.ai sits between the two. It writes the full plan and the cost estimate in about a minute, lets you ask for any day again, and leaves the booking to you, so you keep the control and the price of doing it yourself without the blank page. If the trip is a honeymoon, the honeymoon planner builds the same route around slower mornings, and a family vacation planner brief paces Costa Rica for children.
How the Costa Rica trip planner works
You write a short brief: the places in Costa Rica you care about, or just "first trip, nine days, volcano, cloud forest and a beach", your dates, how many are going, a total budget, the style of trip and the US city you fly from. The plan comes back in about a minute with the regions in order, the nights split, the drive or shuttle between each pair of regions on the day it happens, and each day written in morning, afternoon and evening blocks.
Every line carries an estimate, and the budget meter shows four totals: the flight, the stays, the travel between regions, and the activities, food and local transport. If Manuel Antonio pushes the trip over, ask for that day again with a lower budget, or swap the beach for Guanacaste in the brief and plan again to see the difference. Save the trip to your account and export it as a PDF, which becomes your checklist when you make the reservations yourself. The same planner handles Hawaii trips with the flight between islands, Alaska trips by rail or car, Ireland road trips from Dublin to Kerry, and multi city trips anywhere.
