Layla AI is a good travel chat and an average trip planner. It is quick, friendly and genuinely useful when you do not know where to go yet: you describe a mood, it suggests places, shows short videos of them and sketches an itinerary in seconds. Where it gets thin is the part you pay for a planner to do, turning that sketch into days that work, with the costs worked out. Layla Premium costs $49 a year on the website ($9.99 a month or $49.99 a year in the iPhone app), which is cheap if you enjoy planning by conversation, and money you will not get back if you needed a finished plan. Since July 31, 2026, Layla has been owned by Expedia Group.

This review is built from what Layla publishes itself (its FAQ, terms and US App Store listing), Expedia Group's acquisition announcement, and what users report in 186 App Store ratings and 91 Trustpilot reviews. Where Layla does not publish something, such as the free version's limits or the trial length, we say so rather than guess.

Layla AI review in short

Question Answer
What it is A conversational AI trip planner, on the web and as an app, that suggests destinations and builds a draft itinerary from chat
Price Free to start. Layla Premium $49 a year on the website, $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year on the US App Store
Owner Expedia Group, which announced the acquisition on July 31, 2026. Layla was founded in Berlin in 2023
User ratings 4.7 from 186 ratings on the US App Store, 4.2 from 91 reviews on Trustpilot
Best at Deciding where to go, and getting a quick first draft of a trip
Weakest at Remembering earlier instructions in a long chat, ground travel routing, and a line by line cost of the trip
Refunds Subscription fees are non-refundable, except the 14 day withdrawal right for EU, EEA and UK customers

What Layla AI does well

Layla is at its best at the front of a trip, when the question is still "where". You can start with something as loose as a long weekend somewhere warm in March for two people who like food, and it answers with destinations, a reason for each and short creator videos that show what the place actually looks like. For a lot of people that is the fun part of travel, and Layla makes it faster than an evening of browsing.

It is also fast at a first draft. Ask for three days in a city and you get a day by day outline within the same conversation, with the kind of places a first-timer would want. On Trustpilot, the most common praise is exactly that: speed, a plan that came together without a spreadsheet, and help from a human travel agent when a trip needed booking. Layla's FAQ says its human experts can plan, book and manage a trip from start to finish, and several reviewers describe being handed from the AI to a person.

And it is cheap for what it is. At $49 a year, Premium costs less than one night in most US hotels. If you take three or four leisure trips a year and like the chat format, the price is not the problem.

Where Layla AI falls short

The weak spots show up once a trip has real constraints. The most frequent complaint among Trustpilot reviewers is that the AI loses track of instructions given earlier in the conversation, so a budget, a pace or a "no early mornings" said at the start stops shaping the plan ten messages later. The second is routing: reviewers planning trips by car or train describe being pointed to flights they did not want. About 14 percent of Trustpilot ratings are one star, against 71 percent at five, so opinion is split rather than lukewarm.

The deeper limit is what a chat produces. A conversation is a good way to explore and a poor container for a finished plan. You end up scrolling back to find which day had the museum, and nothing adds up what the trip will cost. Layla does not publish a line by line estimate for flights, stays and days as a feature, and its booking links hand you to partners such as Skyscanner and Booking.com, where the prices are whatever those sites show on the day.

Finally, the free version is a black box. Layla says it offers free trip planning tools with optional upgrades, but no official page says where the free version ends. You find out when the app asks you to upgrade.

How much is Layla Premium, and is it worth it?

Layla Premium costs $49 a year on layla.ai, and the US App Store lists it at $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year. Layla describes Premium only as unlimited access to all premium planning features. Its terms say a free trial, where offered, needs a payment method and converts to paid unless you cancel, and that fees are non-refundable with no credit for partial periods. The full price breakdown, including how the monthly option compares over a year, is on our Layla AI pricing page.

Premium is worth it if the conversation is what you value: you are undecided about destinations, you plan several trips a year, and you enjoy the video-first way Layla shows places. It is not worth it if you are paying for a finished, costed plan, because that is not what Layla publishes as a feature. Buy the monthly plan only for a single trip in the next few weeks; twelve months of it is $119.88, more than double the annual price.

Is Layla AI safe to book through now that Expedia owns it?

Yes, in the ordinary sense: Layla does not take your booking itself so much as hand you to established booking sites, and it is now part of one of the largest online travel companies. Expedia Group said Layla will keep operating, with its team working alongside Expedia.com, Hotels.com and Vrbo, and that the deal combines Layla's planning with Expedia Group's supply and booking technology.

The thing to keep in mind is incentive. An AI planner owned by an online travel agency has every reason to point you at that agency's inventory. That does not make the suggestions bad, but it is a reason to compare a suggested hotel's price elsewhere before you book it. If you plan to put the flights and rooms on a new travel rewards card, it is also worth checking what is holding your credit score back before you apply, since a declined card application in the week before a trip is the wrong kind of surprise.

Layla AI vs Mindtrip vs TripAgent.ai and which one to pay for

Layla Mindtrip TripAgent.ai
Price Free to start, Premium $49 a year Free, no in-app purchases on the US App Store $49 a month or $24 a month billed annually, after a one-time demo
How you plan Chat, with destination videos Chat and map A short brief: where, when, who, budget and pace
What you get back Ideas and a draft itinerary in the conversation Places and an itinerary on a map A written day by day plan with morning, afternoon and evening blocks and travel times
Trip cost No published line by line estimate No published line by line estimate Estimates the return flight, each stay, the hops between cities and every activity, meal and local ride, totaled per day and for the trip
Booking Partner links and human experts Booking links None. You reserve everything yourself from the plan

If you are choosing on price, Mindtrip is free and Layla is cheap. If you are choosing on output, the question is whether you want help deciding or a plan that is decided. For a trip with more than one city, where the order of stops, the nights in each and the train or flight between them decide both the experience and the bill, a multi city trip planner that prices every leg does the work a chat leaves to you. TripAgent.ai costs more than Layla Premium; what the extra buys is the costed itinerary itself, exported as a PDF, with any single day rewritten when you ask for it again.

Who should buy Layla Premium, and who should not

Buy Layla Premium if you travel several times a year, you like to talk a trip through before committing, and inspiration is the part you struggle with. At $49 a year it is a fair price for a planning companion, and Expedia's backing means it is not going anywhere.

Skip it if you already know roughly where and when, and what you need is the days written out and the total worked out before you spend thousands on flights and rooms. Try the demo at the top of this page with your actual trip: it writes the full itinerary and puts a cost estimate on it, so you can compare the output directly with what Layla gave you. If you want to see a straight feature comparison first, the Layla AI alternative page lays the two side by side, and our roundup of the best AI travel planners covers the rest of the field.

Is Layla AI any good?

Layla AI is good at inspiration and quick first drafts, and users rate it 4.7 on the US App Store and 4.2 on Trustpilot. Its common weaknesses are forgetting earlier instructions in long chats and routing that favors flights. It is weaker as a finished, costed trip planner.

Is Layla AI worth paying for?

Layla Premium is worth $49 a year if you plan several trips by chat and value destination ideas. It is not worth it if you need a written itinerary with the costs worked out, because Layla does not publish that as a Premium feature, and its fees are non-refundable.

Is Layla AI free?

Layla AI is free to start, with Premium as an optional upgrade at $49 a year on the website or $9.99 a month on iPhone. Layla does not publish how far the free version goes before it asks you to upgrade.

Is Layla owned by Expedia?

Yes. Expedia Group announced on July 31, 2026 that it had acquired Layla. Layla continues to operate as its own app, and its team works alongside Expedia.com, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What is a good alternative to Layla AI?

Mindtrip is the free alternative for chat and map planning. If you want the whole trip written day by day with the flight, stays and daily costs estimated against your budget, TripAgent.ai does that from $49 a month, with a one-time demo to try first.
