Utah's five national parks sit in one corner of the state, which makes them look like an easy week. They are, if the order is right. Zion and Bryce Canyon are an hour and a half apart, Scenic Byway 12 takes you from Bryce to Capitol Reef, and Moab puts Arches and Canyonlands within forty minutes of the same bed. Get the order wrong, or try to see all five in five days, and the trip becomes a week of driving with short stops at viewpoints.

The short answer

A Utah national parks road trip covers the Mighty 5 (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands) in seven to ten days, driven in that order from Las Vegas or in reverse from Salt Lake City, with about 700 miles of driving from one airport to the other. For two adults in October, seven nights at the federal lodging ceilings plus meals and one $80 park pass come to about $2,400 before the rental car, fuel and flights. TripAgent.ai turns your dates, party, budget and starting city into a day by day Mighty 5 itinerary with the nights split between gateway towns, each drive timed and every stay, activity and meal costed.

TripAgent.ai turns a short brief into the whole loop: which airport to fly into and out of, how many nights in each town, the drives on the days they happen, and a running total you can hold against your budget. You reserve the rooms, campsites and permits yourself, with the plan as your checklist.

Why it works

Three things that make a Utah Mighty 5 road trip work

One direction, two airports

Fly into Las Vegas and out of Salt Lake City, or the reverse, and the loop never doubles back. The planner orders the five parks around the airports you pick and adds the drive from the last park to the gate.

Two nights where it matters

Zion and Moab deserve two or three nights each, Bryce and Capitol Reef usually one. The nights are split against your total days, and the planner says so when five parks will not fit the dates.

Moab priced by month

Moab rooms cost the most in spring and fall and less in July and August. Each stay is estimated for the town and month you sleep there, so the October and July versions of the same loop show different totals.

What it handles

Tell it your trip, get a costed day-by-day itinerary

Share your destination, dates and budget and TripAgent.ai writes a day-by-day itinerary with real places, times and a cost estimate on activities, food and local transport. Name the city you fly from and the plan adds the return flight, a stay for every stop and the hops between cities, and you ask for any day to be rewritten until the plan fits.

  • Orders Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands so the route runs one way
  • Splits your nights between Springdale, Bryce, Torrey and Moab against your total dates
  • Places each drive on its day with the time it takes and an estimated cost
  • Estimates the flight for your whole party into Las Vegas or Salt Lake City from the US city you name
  • Puts a cost on every hike, tour, meal and local ride and totals each day
  • Rewrites and recosts any single day you ask for again

Honest comparison

Three ways to plan a Utah Mighty 5 road trip, and what each one costs you

Most US travelers planning the Mighty 5 end up choosing between a guided multi-park tour, a free itinerary from a blog or the state tourism site, or a planner that writes and costs the loop for them to reserve themselves.

What you get Guided tour or free blog itinerary TripAgent.ai
Price Guided tours charge a per person package price with lodging and the guide bundled; blog itineraries cost nothing Wanderer from $24 a month billed annually, or $49 month to month, after a one-time demo
Fit to your days and party A fixed route on fixed dates, or a sample week written for someone else Built from your parks, dates, party, budget and starting city
Trip cost One package price, or no cost at all An estimate on the flight, each stay, each drive and every activity, meal and local ride, totaled per day and for the trip
Changing a day Not possible on a tour; on a blog route you rework it by hand Ask for that day again and only that day is rewritten and recosted
Reservations Held by the tour operator You reserve the rooms, campsites and Angels Landing permit yourself, with the plan as your list
Best for Travelers who want a guide and no driving Travelers who drive themselves and want the plan and the numbers before they reserve

How much does a Utah national parks road trip cost?

A Utah national parks road trip costs less than most park trips in the West, because three of the five gateway towns sit at the federal standard lodging rate all year. The steadiest published benchmark is the GSA per diem, the ceiling the US government reimburses its own employees for a night and a day of meals. Moab is the one town with its own rate, and it moves with the season.

From the GSA per diem rates for fiscal year 2027, effective October 1, 2026, and the National Park Service fee pages, here is what each part of the Mighty 5 loop costs. Lodging is per room per night before taxes; meals and incidentals are per person per day.

Park and gateway town Lodging ceiling per night Meals and incidentals per day Park entry per vehicle, 7 days
Zion (Springdale), all year $113 $68 $35
Bryce Canyon (Bryce Canyon City, Tropic), all year $113 $68 $35
Capitol Reef (Torrey), all year $113 $68 $20
Arches and Canyonlands (Moab), September and October $223 $86 $30 each
Moab, March to June $212 $86 same
Moab, July and August $165 $86 same
Moab, November to February $113 $86 same
Las Vegas start (Clark County), April to August $120 $86 n/a
Salt Lake City finish, all year $152 $80 n/a

Put that together for two adults sharing a room on a seven night loop in October, flying into Las Vegas and home from Salt Lake City: two nights in Springdale, one near Bryce and one in Torrey at $113, then three in Moab at $223, come to $1,121 in lodging. Meals and incidentals for two over eight days at the local rates add about $1,200. The five parks charge $150 at the gate between them, so one $80 America the Beautiful pass saves $70. That is about $2,400 before the rental car, about 700 miles of fuel and the flights, and a careful traveler in a motel will come in under it.

The same loop in July drops Moab to $165 a night and the lodging to $947, because the desert heat thins the crowds. Those ceilings are a benchmark, not a quote. The planner estimates the stay for the town and month you actually pick, then adds the drives and the days, so the total reflects your route. For a number on a trip you have already shaped, the trip cost calculator works from the same inputs.

What is the best order to visit Utah national parks?

Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, then Canyonlands, starting in Las Vegas and finishing in Salt Lake City. Run it in reverse if the flights from your city into Salt Lake are cheaper. Either way the route runs one direction and every drive is under three hours, which leaves each afternoon for a trail.

  • Las Vegas to Springdale (Zion): about 2.5 hours, 160 miles
  • Zion to Bryce Canyon: about 1.5 hours through the Zion-Mount Carmel tunnel
  • Bryce Canyon to Torrey (Capitol Reef) on Scenic Byway 12: about 2.5 hours, and the drive is a sight in itself
  • Torrey to Moab (Arches): about 2.5 hours
  • Moab to Canyonlands Island in the Sky: about 40 minutes
  • Moab to Salt Lake City airport: about 3.5 to 4 hours

A round trip from Las Vegas works too, but Moab to Las Vegas is about six and a half hours, so the last day is spent in the car. If your route also takes in the Grand Canyon, the national park road trip planner covers the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce loop from Las Vegas, and our Grand Canyon trip cost breakdown prices the South Rim night by night.

How many days do you need for Utah's Mighty 5?

Seven days is the comfortable minimum for all five parks, and eight to ten lets you hike rather than drive between viewpoints. Two nights in Springdale for Zion, one near Bryce, one in Torrey for Capitol Reef and three in Moab for Arches and Canyonlands is a seven night loop that works for most first visits.

With five days, drop one park rather than rush all five. Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef from Las Vegas, or Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef from Salt Lake City, each fit five days without a single drive over three hours. With ten days, add a second Zion day for the Narrows or Angels Landing, a night at Goblin Valley or Kodachrome Basin, and a slow morning in Moab.

Do you need reservations for Utah national parks in 2026?

Fewer than in recent years. Arches ended its timed entry pilot, which ran from 2022 through 2025, so in 2026 you can drive in during operating hours without an advance ticket. The Fiery Furnace hike and Devils Garden Campground still need a reservation.

Zion has no entry reservation, but the Angels Landing hike needs a permit from a lottery: $6 to apply for up to six people and $3 per person if you win, through the seasonal lottery or the day before lottery on recreation.gov. The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private cars for most of the year while the park shuttle runs, so you park in Springdale or at the visitor center and ride in. The plan names which permits your days depend on and when they open, and you check each park page before you go.

Is the America the Beautiful pass worth it for Utah?

Yes. Zion and Bryce Canyon charge $35 per vehicle, Arches and Canyonlands $30 each and Capitol Reef $20, so the five parks cost $150 at the gate. The $80 annual pass covers the car at all five and saves $70 on a single Mighty 5 loop, more if you add the Grand Canyon or come back within the year.

Visitors from outside the US pay an extra $100 per person age 16 and over at Zion and Bryce Canyon from 2026, unless they enter with the $250 nonresident annual pass, which covers the pass holder and up to three other adults. A couple flying in from Europe pays $400 in nonresident fees at those two parks without it, so the pass pays for itself before the second park.

Should you fly into Las Vegas or Salt Lake City?

Fly into Las Vegas if Zion is the park you care about most, because it sits two and a half hours away and Las Vegas usually has more nonstop flights and cheaper rental cars. Fly into Salt Lake City if Arches and Canyonlands come first, since Moab is three and a half to four hours from that airport.

For all five parks, an open jaw (into one, home from the other) saves a full day of driving back. A one way rental between Nevada and Utah often carries a drop fee, so compare that fee against the day you save and the hotel night you skip. The planner treats the two airports as fixed points and builds the loop between them.

How the Utah national parks road trip planner works

You write a short brief: the parks you want, or just "Mighty 5, eight days, two adults, moderate hikes", your dates, how many are going, a total budget and the US city you fly from. The plan comes back in about a minute with the parks in driving order, the nights split between Springdale, Bryce, Torrey and Moab, each drive placed on its day with the time it takes, and a cost on the flight, every stay, every hike, meal and local ride.

Every line carries an estimate, and the budget meter shows the totals for the flight, the stays, the travel between stops, and the activities, food and local transport. If three Moab nights in October push the trip over, ask for that day again with a lower budget, or move the trip to July and watch the stay estimate drop. For family trips, the family vacation planner sets shorter hikes and earlier evenings for the same loop.

Good questions

Questions US travelers ask before a Utah national parks road trip

For two adults, a seven night Mighty 5 loop in October comes to about $2,400 at the federal lodging and meal ceilings, plus one $80 park pass, before the rental car, fuel and flights. In July Moab rooms drop and the same loop costs about $2,200. Most travelers in motels spend less than the ceiling.
Seven days covers all five parks at a comfortable pace: two nights in Springdale for Zion, one near Bryce Canyon, one in Torrey for Capitol Reef and three in Moab for Arches and Canyonlands. With five days, see three parks properly rather than five from the car.
Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands, starting in Las Vegas and ending in Salt Lake City, or the reverse. The route runs one way and no drive between parks takes more than about three hours, with Scenic Byway 12 between Bryce and Capitol Reef.
April, May, September and October bring the mildest hiking weather and the highest Moab room rates. July and August are hot in Moab and Zion, which is why Moab rooms cost less then. Winter is quiet and cheap, but Bryce Canyon gets snow and some roads close.
Not for entry. Arches ended timed entry after 2025, and Zion has no entry reservation. You do need a lottery permit for Angels Landing, a reservation for the Fiery Furnace hike at Arches, and campground reservations at the popular in-park campgrounds.
Yes. The five parks charge $150 between them for one car, so the $80 annual pass saves $70 on a single loop. Visitors from outside the US also pay $100 per person extra at Zion and Bryce Canyon unless they carry the $250 nonresident pass.
Yes. Zion is about two and a half hours from Las Vegas and Bryce Canyon about four. A round trip covering all five parks works, but the drive from Moab back to Las Vegas takes about six and a half hours, so flying home from Salt Lake City saves a day.
No. It writes and costs the itinerary and names what is worth reserving early, such as the Angels Landing lottery and a Moab room for October, with a search link, but it makes no reservations. You book the flights, rental car, rooms and permits yourself, using the plan as the checklist.
